Scaling and Root Planing
Scaling and Root Planing Post-Op Instructions
Scaling and Root Planing removes bacteria, bacteria’s toxins, tartar build up, diseased deposits from the surfaces of the tooth roots under the gum tissues. Scaling and root planing may need multiple treatments and appointments and local anesthetic may be required. Scaling and Root planing is most commonly the firststep to treat gum disease (periodontal disease). Additional treatments may be needed with scaling and root planing.
It depends on how many teeth are included when scaling and root planing. In many cases if only a few teeth need scaling and root planning ( deep cleaning) then 1 appointment is needed. If the whole mouth to majority of teeth need scaling and root planning than 2 appointments is needed. After scaling and root planning we would like you to come back in 6-8 weeks to re evaluate your tissues.
Your gums may feel sensitive after the cleaning for a couple of days. Fluoridated mouth washes or toothpaste can help alleviate these symptoms. You may need an over the counter pain medication such as Ibuprofen for any tenderness of the gums and sensitivity. In addition, you may also use warm salt water rinses ( 1/4 teaspoon of salt : 1 cup of warm water) for 30 seconds as needed. Maintain a soft food diet for the first 24 hours.
- Avoid spicy foods for 24-48 hours.
- Avoid crunchy foods for 24-48 hours.
- Avoid smoking for at least a week.
- Refrain from eating until anesthetic has worn off.
